Cats, dogs, and good food — these are the things I love, and they find their way into my pottery. "Nyanko" means "kitty" in Japanese, and kitties turn up throughout my work, in one form or another.

I make the kind of pottery I'd want in my own home — pieces that feel good to hold, not just to look at. If something brings a small smile, that's great.

It started with wanting to make bowls and dishes for serving Japanese food at home. At the time I had three cats, so naturally, a good number of bowls were made for them too — tested thoroughly, and approved by them. These days I work from a small studio in my garden, with Columbo the cat and Louie the dog keeping watch while I throw pots on the wheel.

The first four clay cats I made many years ago were modeled by my own cats. Neil, Chocho, Chaplin are no longer with us. The little one is kitten Columbo, who is now a middle aged cat.

These clay cats were modelled after my own — Neil, Chocho, Chaplin, and Columbo as a kitten. Neil, Chocho, and Chaplin are no longer with us, but Columbo, now a middle-aged cat, carries on their playful spirit.
